Risk-aversion optimal hedging scenarios during droughts

چکیده

Abstract The primary purpose of a water supply reservoir is to regular highly fluctuating streamflow for providing reliable supplies. Reducing shortage risk impending droughts challenge task in real-time operation due future inflow uncertainty. main aim this study propose risk-aversion optimal hedging scenarios during droughts, which achieved by two-stage approach. probabilities lead times are analytically estimated first, then follows an optimization framework that simultaneously minimizing and sustaining long-term reliability. With illustration application the Nanhua Reservoir located southern Taiwan, results indicate proposed provides efficient reduce mitigate severe shortages operation. outperforms rule-curve-based current Further improvements noted time-varying rationing coefficient than constant-coefficient scenario most favorable with highest frequency. Using storage trigger associated lead-time as objective functions, not only aversion but also executable droughts.

Commodity Futures Hedging, Risk Aversion and the Hedging Horizon

This paper examines the impact of management preferences on optimal futures hedging strategy and associated performance. Applying an expected utility hedging objective, the optimal futures hedge ratio is determined for a range of preferences on risk aversion, hedging horizon and expected returns. Empirical results reveal substantial hedge ratio variation across distinct management preferences a...

Time - varying risk aversion : an application to energy hedging

Risk aversion is a key element of utility maximizing hedge strategies; however, it has typically been assigned an arbitrary value in the literature. This paper instead applies a GARCH-in-Mean (GARCH-M) model to estimate a time-varying measure of risk aversion that is based on the observed risk preferences of energy hedging market participants. The resulting estimates are applied to derive expli...

Model-based scenarios of Mediterranean droughts

This study examines the change in current 100year hydrological drought frequencies in the Mediterranean in comparison to the 2070s as simulated by the global model WaterGAP. The analysis considers socio-economic and climate changes as indicated by the IPCC scenarios A2 and B2 and the global general circulation model ECHAM4. Under these conditions today’s 100-year drought is estimated to occur 1...

Optimal design, robustness, and risk aversion.

Highly optimized tolerance is a model of optimization in engineered systems, which gives rise to power-law distributions of failure events in such systems. The archetypal example is the highly optimized forest fire model. Here we give an analytic solution for this model which explains the origin of the power laws. We also generalize the model to incorporate risk aversion, which results in trunc...

Optimal Market-Making with Risk Aversion

Risk management is the underlying paradigm necessary to mitigate the impact of adverse outcomes such as financial crises, energy shortages, oil disasters, global supply chain disruptions, and a myriad of other potentially catastrophic large-scale system failures. This seminar series serves as a platform to bring together diverse perspectives, problem definitions and solutions that transcend dis...
